Tanya Sichko Ties School Wins Record as Bucknell Stomps TCNJ in Singles Play

EWING, N.J. - It was a record-setting day against The College of New Jersey as junior Tanya Sichko picked up her 91st victory at Bucknell, combining singles and doubles, equaling the total Kristina Lutter finished with in 1994. In total, the Bucknell tennis teams continued their singles success against the Lions, with the men's team winning 13 singles matches and the women's team picking up 12 between Friday's and Saturday's play.
Sichko's wins came over TCNJ's Jackie Gavornik, 6-0, 6-2, and Ayumi Yamazaki, 6-2, 7-5. She was part of a perfect Flight B, as Nadezda Curcic knocked off Yamazaki, 6-2, 6-2, and Gavornik, 6-2, 6-2. Rheanna Gaskin followed up her Friday win with a Saturday defeat of Kristen Klepacki, 6-0, 6-0, while Veronica Brown, who lost to Klepacki on Friday, beat Kristen Turturiello, 6-1, 6-1. Flight C was also perfect for Bucknell, as Samantha Berthod improved on her already school-record singles wins total, recording her 52nd and 53rd wins over Jackie Pryzbylkowski, 6-1, 6-0, and Katie Richards, 6-4, 6-2. Chelsea Mills recorded her second win of the weekend on Saturday, beating Richards, 6-1, 6-1. Kelly Porter rebounded from a Friday loss by beating Kelli Emery of TCNJ, 6-3, 6-2, though Flight D teammate Renee Clinton lost her one match of the weekend to Shih, 4-6, 6-1, (10-3).
On the men's side, Nick Denefrio followed up his Friday win by knocking off TCNJ's Bryan Hanley on Saturday, 7-5, 6-2. Salam recorded his second win Saturday by beating Ryan Carty of TCNJ, 2-6, 6-4, (10-7). Gerald DiChiara also won his second of two singles matches on the weekend by beating Corey Ball of TCNJ, 6-2, 6-2. Aaron Saperstein went two-for-two on the weekend, winning both his matches on Saturday, first over Vic Lai, 6-4, 6-7(5), (12-10), and then over Ken Tsui, 7-5, 6-3. Matt Pikus also recorded his second win of the weekend, beating Lai, 6-2, 6-2. Brian Cohen also picked up two wins on Saturday, beating Tarik Zunic, 6-2, 6-0, and Mike Ehrlich, 4-6, 6-4, (12-10). Bison losses on Saturday went to Joe Menezes, who fell to Justin Cook, 7-6(3), 6-4, and Wes Madara, who lost to Zunic, 6-4, 6-3, and Ehrlich, 7-5, 6-3.
Both the men's and the women's teams completed five matches on Friday. Three late scores on the women's side included Tanya Sichko's win over Ayumi Yamazaki of TCNJ, 6-2, 7-5, as well as Chelsea Mills' win over TCNJ's Kevin Shih, 6-1, 6-4 and Kelly Porter's loss to New Jersey's Jackie Pryzbylkowski, 6-3, 6-1.
Bucknell and the College of New Jersey will continue on Sunday with doubles play. Sichko can break the record with a doubles win.
