LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh paced four Bucknell women's basketball players in double-figures with a 21 point effort in BU's 74-59 win over first-place Lehigh in Patriot League action on Wednesday, February 11. The victory for the Bison snapped a three-game losing streak to the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh got on the board first on a Jessica DePalo jumper just 18 seconds into the game, but a Lillian Drumgold layup 22 seconds later tied the contest, and Hollobaugh's first two points of the night gave the Orange and Blue a lead they would not relinquish. Bucknell quickly built its advantage to seven before a Dawn Gorynski three-pointer and another jumper from DePalo got the Mountain Hawks back within two, 15-13 halfway through the opening frame.
The Bison proceeded to put together a 15-4 run over the next six minutes, forcing Lehigh into five of its 16 first half turnovers during the stretch, to jump out to a 30-17 lead. Hollobaugh scored six points during the spurt, while sophomore Lindsey Geosits added five. Hollobaugh's jumper with 3:30 left in the half, however, proved the last points the Bison would score for the next 2:30 minutes while the Mountain Hawks whittled the deficit to just five with under a minute until the break.
A Brooke Tomovich jumper with 36 seconds left, and a Hollobaugh three with just four seconds until intermission gave the Orange and Blue a 10-point halftime cushion, 36-26. The Bison, outrebounded in the frame, 20-11, shot .500 from the field in the frame while allowing Lehigh to connect on .423 percent of its shots.
Senior Desire Almind made it a 42-30 contest with her steal and coast to coast layup at the 16:15 mark of the second half, before it appeared Lehigh was going to make its move. The Mountain Hawks rattled off four unanswered to get back within single-digits, but Hollobaugh hit two free throws to push it back to a 44-34 Bucknell lead, and the Bison advantage would never fall below double-figures the rest of the game.
Lehigh turned the ball over on 10 of its next 12 possessions, allowing the BU lead to swell to 22 points before a DePalo layup with 8:37 to go stopped a six minute drought for the visitors. DePalo scored six of Lehigh's next 10 points, with the other four coming from Jenny Callan, and limited the Bison to just two as the Mountain Hawks got back within 12, 58-46.
Drumgold scored on a layup with just under three minutes to go to stop Lehigh's momentum, and the Orange and Blue converted 10-of-12 free throws in the final 2:21 to get the 15-point victory. A three-pointer by Gorynski with 0.1 seconds remaining created the final score of 74-59.
Bucknell improved to shoot an impressive .571 from the field in the second-half to finish the game with a .529 clip (27-51). The Bison also grabbed a season-best 15 steals, while forcing the Mountain Hawks into a season-high 34 turnovers and scoring 32 points as a result of the miscues. BU won the rebounding battle in the second half, 18-15, but Lehigh still held a 35-29 advantage on the glass for the game.
In addition to Hollobaugh, who recorded her third career 20-point game, Almind tallied 15 points, Geosits 14 and senior Kristin Valdner scored 10. Almind led all players with 12 rebounds for her league-best 15th double-double of the year.
DePalo led all scorers with 28 points, while Callan had a team-high eight rebounds for Lehigh .
Bucknell improves to 11-11 overall and 4-5 in the Patriot League. The Bison travel to Navy on Saturday, February 14, for a 1:00 p.m. clash with the Mids. Lehigh still maintains a share of the conference lead at 6-3, but the Mountain Hawks fall to 9-13 overall.
