LEWISBURG, Pa. - Holy Cross' Maggie Fontana scored 13 of her game-high 22 points in the first half, staking the Crusaders to a 31-22 halftime lead that would never dip below seven in the second on the way to a 71-55 decision at Bucknell on Sunday, February 1. The Bison led just once in the contest.
Holy Cross opened up a 6-0 lead in the game's first three and a half minutes before a Desire Almind jumper got the Orange and Blue on the board. A layup by freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh, and a steal and finish by sophomore Lindsey Geosits knotted the game at six just two minutes later.
Bucknell trailed by five again under a minute later, but three points from junior Lillian Drumgold and a Hollobaugh layup tied the game for the second time at 11-11. Fontana broke the Crusaders four-minute drought with her second-straight three, and the visitors held a 16-13 advantage with 9:20 to go in the half.
Hollobaugh drained two free throws with 8:44 on the clock, and an Almind jumper at 8:26 capped a 4-0 run and gave the Bison their only lead of the night, 17-16. Holy Cross proceeded to outscore Bucknell 15-5 over the remainder of the frame to carry a 31-22 lead into the intermission.
The Orange and Blue overcame rough shooting in the first half (.243, 9-37) to improve to .419 (13-31) in the second, but allowed the Crusaders to connect on .538 (14-26) of their second-half shots and .464 for the game.
Holy Cross opened the second-half with four-straight points to open up a double-figure lead just two minutes into it. The visitors built their advantage to 15 at the 16-minute mark behind 4-of-5 shooting from the field, but the Bison put together a run to make things interesting.
Drumgold scored six points for BU, capping a 10-4 spurt with two free throws at the 11:53 mark, to get the host team within nine, 46-37. The two teams exchanged buckets on the next six possessions before a Drumgold free throw got Bucknell within eight, 52-44, with 8:35 to go.
Down 12 just a minute later, the Bison got three points from Almind and a fastbreak layup from Hollobaugh to make it a seven point contest at the six minute mark. That was a close as the Bison would get, however, and Holy Cross connected on 9-of-10 free throws in the final 3:15 to seal the 71-55 win.
Despite outscoring the Crusaders 12-0 on fast break points, the Orange and Blue suffered an 0-12 night from downtown, while allowing HC to hit 6-of-12 behind the arc.
Almind led Bucknell with 18 points and 14 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season. Also in double-figures were Hollobaugh with 13 and Drumgold with 12.
Holy Cross was paced by Fontana's 22, Lisa Andrews' 17 and 15 from Sarah Placek.
Bucknell falls to 9-11 overall and 2-5 in the Patriot League. The Bison host American on Saturday, February 7, to start the second round of league action. The Crusaders move to 10-10 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
