Bucknell Track and Field Teams Start Up Indoor Season with Bison Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Facility and school records fell as the Bison men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the indoor season on Saturday with the Bison Opener held at Gerhard Fieldhouse. Sophomore Melanie Buczko started the season with a bang breaking her own facility and school records with an event winning jump of 12 feet, 10 inches, besting her previous indoor best of 12'9 1/2."
Meanwhile on the track, sophomore Christa Sawko ran to a victory in the 800-meters, running a career-best 2:12.03. Sawko's performance springboards her to second-place in the Bison record books and bested her previous top indoor time by over three seconds.. Stephanie Bango set the school record in 2002 with a time of 2:09.08. In the throwing events, Marge Grap, also a sophomore, tossed a 51'9 3/4" in the weight throw to pick up another Bison victory.
Angie Hall, yet another sophomore, was the lone Bison woman to grab a runner-up honors on the day, taking second in the pole vault with a personal-best leap of 11'10.' Also recording high finishes in the season opener were third-place finishers senior Monique Boley (400 - 59.08), sophomore Ann Doty (triple jump - 37'6 3/4"), senior Angie McFarland (weight - 49'7 1/4"), and senior Katie Pfeifer (3000 - 10.34.74).
On the men's side, junior Nick DeGregorio made second and third place showings in the throws, snatching the runner-up spot in the shot put with a throw of 48'8 1/4," and placing third in the weight throw with a toss of 46'3 1/4."
Junior Kevin Fortkiewicz ran to a second-place finish in the 3000, clocking a time of 8:51.60. Also in the distance events, sophomore Mark Caroleo placed third in the mile, running 4:22.87, while the Bucknell distance medley team ran to a second-place showing, recording a time of 10:43.48.
The Bison track and field squads will be back in action after winter break with the Gulden Relays on Jan. 8, at Gerhard Fieldhouse.
