LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior offensive tackle Justin Gibson (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Gibson earned second-team honors and becomes Bucknell's 109th Academic All-American, a total that ranks third nationally among Division I institutions.
Gibson is the 20th Bucknell football player to earn Academic All-America recognition and the first since David Evans in 2000. In order to be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.20 grade-point average into at least his sophomore year and be a starter or significant reserve.
An accounting major with a 3.77 GPA, Gibson earned his third varsity letter in 2004 as a member of the Bison's offensive line. He played in all 11 contests this season, including five starts, and he helped Bucknell to a No. 8 national ranking in rushing offense at 251.8 yards per game. The team topped the 200-yard rushing plateau in 8 of 11 games, with a season-high 413 yards against Holy Cross on Oct. 30.
Gibson interned last summer with the Deloitte accounting firm in Pittsburgh, where he will be employed following graduation. He is a member of the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, as well as the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society.
Gibson was named to the Academic All-District first team for the second straight year, joining teammate Mike Cangelosi.
Under the direction of head coach Tim Landis, Bucknell finished 7-4 in 2004, is best mark since 1999. The Bison tied with defending champion Colgate for third place in the Patriot League at 4-2 in conference play.
