LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Justin Gibson (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) was one of 36 college football players named to the Seventh Annual Division I-AA Athletic Directors Association Academic All-Star Team, the organization announced Friday.
In addition, Gibson was selected as one of six finalists for the Division I-AA ADA's $5,000 Postgraduate Scholarship. Two student-athletes will receive scholarships during the association's annual membership meeting held in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention, which will be held at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., in June 2005.
Football players from all I-AA institutions are eligible for the awards. Each nominee must be at least a sophomore and have a minimum grade-point average of 3.20 and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials.
An accounting major with a 3.77 GPA, Gibson earned his third varsity letter in 2004 as a member of the Bison's offensive line. Earlier this month he was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team, making him Bucknell's 109th Academic All-American since 1970.
He played in all 11 contests this season, including five starts, and he helped Bucknell to a No. 8 national ranking in rushing offense at 251.8 yards per game. The team topped the 200-yard rushing plateau in 8 of 11 games, with a season-high 413 yards against Holy Cross on Oct. 30.
Gibson interned last summer with the Deloitte accounting firm in Pittsburgh, where he will be employed following graduation. He is a member of the Bucknell Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, as well as the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society.
Gibson was also named to the Academic All-District first team for the second straight year, joining teammate Mike Cangelosi.
Under the direction of head coach Tim Landis, Bucknell finished 7-4 in 2004, is best mark since 1999. The Bison tied with defending champion Colgate for third place in the Patriot League at 4-2 in conference play.
Joining Gibson on the list of finalists for the postgraduate scholarship are Lafayette offensive lineman Stephen Bono, Valparaiso wide receiver Kevin Knutson, Robert Morris linebacker Jonathan LeDonne, Elon center Brandon Mason and Morehead State linebacker Craig Unger.
Gibson and Bono were the lone Patriot League representatives on the 36-man all-star squad.
