LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell junior defensive end Sean Conover (Whitman, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) added to his already crowded cache of postseason honors on Thursday when he was named to the Associated Press Division I-AA All-America squad.
Conover was a second-team selection, making him Bucknell's first AP All-American since Adam Lord in 2002. Earlier this week he was named to The Sports Network's All-America Second Team, and Conover was also selected as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year.
A 6'5" junior defensive end, Conover came to Bucknell as a tight end but was converted to defense prior to his sophomore season, and his transformation into a dominant force on defense proved to be one of the top stories of the year in the league.
Conover, who was also a first-team all-conference choice, tied for the Patriot League lead in sacks this season with 10.5, the fourth-highest single-season total in school history. He finished with 55 tackles (33 solo) and his 18 tackles behind the line of scrimmage resulted in 110 lost yards for the opposition. Conover had back-to-back three-sack efforts against Lehigh and Holy Cross, and all but one of his sacks this season came in Patriot League play. He also led the league with five forced fumbles.
Conover was one of five Patriot League players named to the AP All-America squad. Lehigh tight end Adam Bergen and Fordham cornerback Tad Kornegay were first-team picks, while Conover, Colgate running back Jamaal Branch and Lehigh defensive lineman Tom Alfsen were second-team selections.
Conover is Bucknell's 15th AP All-American at the I-AA level and 52nd overall.
The Bison finished the 2004 season with a 7-4 record and tied for third in the Patriot League with a 4-2 conference ledger.
