LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Bucknell junior defensive end Sean Conover was named the The Sports Network I-AA All-America Football Team on Monday. Conover, who was recently named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, was a Second-Team All-America selection in TSN's poll of media and sports information directors.
A 6'5" junior defensive end, Conover came to Bucknell as a tight end but was converted to defense prior to his sophomore season, and his transformation into a dominant force on defense proved to be one of the top stories of the year in the league.
Conover, who was also a first-team all-conference choice, tied for the Patriot League lead in sacks this season with 10.5, the fourth-highest single-season total in school history. He finished with 55 tackles (33 solo) and his 18 tackles behind the line of scrimmage resulted in 110 lost yards for the opposition. Conover had back-to-back three-sack efforts against Lehigh and Holy Cross, and all but one of his sacks this season came in Patriot League play. He also led the league with five forced fumbles.
The co-recipient of the George Rieu Award as Bucknell's most outstanding defensive lineman, Conover is Bucknell's first football All-American since Adam Lord, another defensive lineman, in 2002.
Conover was one of five Patriot League players to make The Sports Network's All-America squad. Lehigh tight end Adam Bergen and Fordham defensive back Tad Kornegay were first team picks. Colgate running back Jamaal Branch joined Conover on the second team, while Lehigh defensive lineman Tom Alfsen was a third-team honoree.
Bucknell finished 7-4 in 2004 and tied for third place in the Patriot League with a 4-2 conference record.
