LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's Jonathan Hemmert and Greg Buzzell have been named to the 2004 Academic All-District II Men's Soccer Team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Hemmert, a senior, made his third consecutive appearance on the first team, while Buzzell, also a senior, was honored for the first time in his career.
With his selection to the first team, Hemmert is now eligible for national Academic All-America recognition. The national team will be voted on later this month and announced on Monday, Nov. 22. Last year Hemmert became the 107th Academic All-America selection from Bucknell. That figure ranks third in the nation, behind only Nebraska and Notre Dame.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a player must be at least a sophomore and a starter or significant reserve on his team, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
Hemmert has had an outstanding final season for the Bison, ranking second on the team in goals (4), assists (4) and points (12). On two separate occasions this year the midfielder has tallied three points in a match. The first time came during a 4-3 loss to La Salle. Hemmert scored one goal and assisted on another against the Explorers. Two games later he assisted on all three goals in a 3-2 victory over NJIT.
The Westerville, Ohio, native has started all 15 games he has appeared in this season and has upped his career assist total to 21, second on Bucknell's all-time list. With nine career goals to go with his 21 assists, Hemmert has totaled 39 career points.
In the classroom, Hemmert has been equally successful, maintaining a 3.91 grade point average while majoring in political science. The 2003 Patriot League Men's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year, Hemmert is also a Dean's List member. In addition, he is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and spent the spring semester of his junior year studying abroad in Italy.
Buzzell has played in all 17 games this year, making 12 starts at his midfield position. He has seen action in 65 career games and has drawn 27 starts in his four years as a Bison. Despite not tallying a goal or an assist this year, Buzzell has five career assists and one goal in his career.

Off the field, the economics major holds a 3.86 grade point average, but owns a 4.0 within his major. A three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Buzzell has been on the Dean's List every semester. The DuBois, Pa., native is also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. Buzzell's list of achievements also includes winning the Craig A. Reynolds Sportsmanship Award as a sophomore as well as being a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
Bucknell will wrap up its regular season Saturday with a match in Worcester, Mass., against Holy Cross. With a win and an American loss to Lafayette Saturday, the Bison will host the Patriot League Tournament Nov. 12 and Nov. 14. Bucknell, which can finish as low as fifth in the standings, clinches a berth in the four-team field with a win or a tie, or a loss or a tie by either Lehigh or Colgate.
