LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior Jonathan Hemmert has been named to the 2004 ESPN Academic All-America Men's Soccer University Division Team, announced Monday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Hemmert is making his second consecutive appearance on the national team. Last year he became just the third player in Bison men's soccer history to earn a spot on the squad and only the second to land on the first team.
Bucknell's past men's soccer Academic All-American's were Greg Beatty (1993 - first team, 1994 - second team) and Ryan Weber (2001 - second team).
In order to be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a player must be at least a sophomore and a starter or significant reserve on his team, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
With his selection to the first team, Hemmert became the 108th Academic All-America selection from Bucknell. That figure ranks third in the nation, behind only Nebraska and Notre Dame.
Hemmert had an outstanding final season for the Bison, ranking second on the team in goals (5), assists (5) and points (15). On two separate occasions this year the midfielder has tallied three points in a match. The first time came during a 4-3 loss to La Salle. Hemmert scored one goal and assisted on another against the Explorers. Two games later he assisted on all three goals in a 3-2 victory over NJIT.
The Westerville, Ohio, native started all 17 games he appeared in this season and upped his career assist total to 22, second on Bucknell's all-time list. With 10 career goals to go with his 22 assists, Hemmert finished his career with 42 points.
In the classroom, Hemmert has been equally successful, maintaining a 3.91 grade point average while majoring in political science. The 2003 Patriot League Men's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year, Hemmert is also a Dean's List member. In addition, he is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and spent the spring semester of his junior year studying abroad in Italy.
Bucknell finished its season 7-9-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the Patriot League. The Bison were the third seed in the Patriot League postseason tournament and lost to second-seeded Lehigh 6-5 in a shootout after the two teams played to a 0-0 tie.
