WASHINGTON, D.C. - The third seeded Bucknell men's soccer team played Lehigh to a 0-0 tie at the end of overtime, but fell to the second seeded Mountain Hawks 6-5 in the shootout during the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament Friday at Reeves Field. The Bison finish their season with a 7-9-3 record.
In the eighth round of the shootout, Joe Clemente scored the winning goal to advance Lehigh to the championship match Sunday versus the winner of the other semifinal contest between American and Lafayette.
For the second consecutive year Bucknell and Lehigh met in the semifinal round. The Mountain Hawks, who advanced to their third consecutive championship game with the victory, downed the Bison 2-0 last year.
Bucknell freshman goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach recorded his third shutout of the season by making six saves in the match that saw each team attempt just nine shots. Outside of the second half when Bucknell fired seven shots and Lehigh shot five, there were just six shots attempted.
Mountain Hawks' goalkeeper Sam Bishop notched his fourth shutout of the season in the winning effort by making two saves.
The Bison played the final 26 minutes of regulation and the 20 minutes of overtime a man short after Jonathan Hemmert picked up a red card at the 63:57 mark.
"It was our best game of the year," commented Bucknell head coach Brendan Nash. "Michael Lookingland and Ori Adrabi played great. Unfortunately once it comes down to penalty kicks it is like flipping a coin and we came out on the wrong end."
Bucknell was making its second consecutive appearance in the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in its history. The Bison have participated in the league tournament five times, including three of the last five seasons.
