No. 17 Bucknell Men's Water Polo Splits Pair at Claremont Convergence

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Bucknell men's water polo team used overtime goals from Jason Rechel and Jay Danforth to earn a split of its two games at the Claremont Convergence Saturday as the Bison defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 9-7 in overtime and lost to No. 20 Redlands 7-4.
In the opener, the 9-7 victory over the Stags, Bucknell needed three fourth-quarter goals to even the score at 7-7 and force overtime. Once the Bison reached overtime, their defense held Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scoreless for the duration as Rechel and Danforth tallied goals. The stingy defense that allowed just one goal after the start of the fourth quarter made a season-high 19 steals, including five from Aaron Platshon and four each from Nick Ferring and Danforth.
Danforth led the team with three goals, while Bradley Roslyn and Elliot Benoist contributed two apiece. Bucknell fired 31 shots at the goal to score its nine goals.
In the nightcap against Redlands, ranked 20th in the latest national poll and first in the division III rankings, the Bison defense picked up where it left off as it tallied nine steals and held the Stags without a goal in the first half. Goalie Trevor Mullins, who made eight saves in the opener, stopped six more shots to bring his season total to 121.
However, the defense came unraveled in the second half, allowing seven goals. Entering the game, the Bucknell offense had been averaging 10.2 goals per game, but was able to score just once in each of the four quarters as Bradley Roslyn tallied three goals and San Robinson added one.
The Bison conclude their busy weekend Sunday, Oct. 10, when they face defending national champion USC. The game is slated for a 2 p.m. (EDT) start. The Trojans are currently ranked third in the country this season.
