CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Bucknell men's water polo team split its two games during the opening day of the Claremont Convergence Friday. The Bison, ranked 17th in the latest national pool, defeated Santa Clara 12-8 in the second contest of the day after falling to Whittier 8-5 in overtime to open the two-day competition.
In the nightcap against Santa Clara, Bucknell opened up a 5-3 halftime lead and cruised to the 12-8 victory as four different players scored at least two goals, led by Nick Ferring's four tallies. Ferring also attempted a team-high seven shots as the Bison fired at the goal 23 times.
Sean Robinson, who scored three times, also eclipsed the two-goal figure, while Bradley Roslyn and Jay Danforth netted two goals apiece. Trevor Mullins, who made 11 saves in the opener against Whittier, stopped six shots in goal to bring his daily total to 17 saves and his season total above the century mark at 107. He has started all 16 games in goal this season.
In the opener against Whittier, a team ranked second in the nation in Division III, the Bison played the Poets even through four quarters, but allowed three goals in overtime to drop the 8-5 decision. Bucknell opened up a 2-1 first quarter lead, but failed to find the back of the net in the second quarter as the two teams entered halftime tied at 2-2. Each team netted two goals in the third quarter and one more in the fourth to send the game to overtime.
Kyle Roslyn led the way for the Bison with two goals, while his brother Bradley Roslyn, Elliot Benoist and Ferring each added one goal apiece.
On defense, co-captain Aaron Platshon made a career-high seven steals, while Bradley Roslyn contributed four to the team's season-high total of 16.
With the overtime loss, Bucknell fell to 1-1 in overtime games this season. Earlier this year, the Bison defeated Salem International in extra periods at Kinney Natatorium.
The Bison will wrap up the two-day Claremont Convergence Saturday, Oct. 9, with a pair of games against Claremont-Mudd Scripps, ranked eighth nationally in Division III, and Redlands, ranked first nationally in Division III and 20th in the overall national poll.
