PRINCETON, N.J. - The Bucknell men's water polo team, ranked 20th in the country, was aiming for its fourth third-place finish in five years at the Southern Championships, but lost to Salem International 12-6 in the third-place game Sunday morning to finish in fourth place in the field of 12 teams.
By virtue of finishing among the top four teams, the Bison qualified for a berth in the Eastern Championships, held at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium Nov. 13-14. It is the fifth consecutive year the Bison have qualified for the event.
Bucknell had defeated Salem International in both previous meetings this year. Both victories came in overtime as the Bison upended the Tigers 12-10 in September at Kinney Natatorium and 9-8 in Annapolis, Md.
In Sunday's contest Jay Danforth and Bradley Roslyn each netted a pair of goals, but only Elliot Benoist and Jason Rechel joined them in the scoring column with single goals apiece. Danforth, who now has 46 goals this season, is just one score shy of tying his career-high mark of 47. Roslyn is just four goals shy of tying his personal best of 48.
Trevor Mullins made at least 10 saves for the fourth consecutive game as he stopped 11 Tigers' shots. He now has 223 saves this year.
Bucknell's next game will be part of the Eastern Championships Nov. 13-14. The schedule for the tournament will be announced at a later date. The Bison have finished seventh at the event in three of the last four years.
