LEWISBURG, Pa. - The host Bucknell men's water polo team split a pair of games at the Eastern Championship Saturday at Kinney Natatorium. The Bison dropped a 9-4 decision to No. 10 St. Francis (N.Y.) in their opener, but bounced back to defeat Brown in their second game of the day. Bucknell (16-13) will play in the fifth-place game Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. against Salem International.
In the opener against St. Francis, a team that downed the Bison 13-6 in the championship game of the ECAC Championships in September and has been ranked among the best in the country all year, Bucknell held its own, trailing just 2-1 at halftime. However, the Terriers outscored Bucknell 7-3 in the second half.
Behind a strong defense keyed by junior Trevor Mullins in goal, Bucknell was able to keep the score close in the first half. Mullins made nine saves in each contest Saturday to increase his season total to 241. He is just 12 saves shy of tying Bill Porter for 10th place on Bucknell's single-season list.
Sean Robinson led the way against the Terriers with a pair of goals, while Bradley Roslyn and Nick Ferring added one apiece. Roslyn was also credited with an assist and two steals in the loss.
In the nightcap against the Bears, the Bison jumped out to a 4-2 lead at halftime and then held Brown scoreless for the entire second half on the way to their 5-2 victory. Ferring added three more goals, while senior co-captain Aaron Platshon tallied two scores. He also had a team-high three steals.
Bucknell played both games without senior co-captain Elliot Benoist who suffered an injury earlier in the week.
The Bison will wrap up their season Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. against Salem International. Bucknell owns a 2-1 record against the Tigers this year with both victories coming in overtime. Salem International defeated the Bison 12-6 two weeks ago at the Southern Championships. With a win and a fifth-place finish, Bucknell will earn its best showing at the Eastern Championship since finishing fourth in 1998.
