LEWISBURG, Pa. - Kari Weniger scored the only goal of the game at the 71:12 mark to give Navy a 1-0 win over Bucknell in women's soccer action Sunday afternoon from a sun-drenched West Fields. The Bison, who were officially eliminated from postseason contention, finish the year at 7-8-1, 2-4-1 in the Patriot League.
Weniger's goal came during a chaotic sequence. Bucknell goalkeeper Katie Dry, who made one save in the match, came out to challenge Xochitl Piedra who was dribbling towards the goal on the right side of the field. Piedra looped the ball over the sliding Dry's head for a sure goal. However, Jennifer Mrozek stepped in to head the ball away from the net. Brigitte Fox scooped up the rebound and quickly passed to Weniger, who shot the ball past a pair of Bucknell defenders trying to protect the goal in Dry's absence.
Despite attempting just seven shots and not scoring a goal, the Bison did have a couple of good scoring chances in the first half. With 32:36 remaining on the clock in the first half, Jennifer Margolis took a diagonal shot that hit the left post. Also in the first half, Lexi Shore launched a shot from 18 yards out that Kim Bonafede, Navy's goalie, jumped to save. It was one of four saves in the contest for Bonafede.
Coming into the match Bucknell was still alive for postseason consideration. With a win and a Holy Cross victory over Army Monday, the Bison would have sneaked in as the fourth seed in the four-team field. Instead, Navy needs a Holy Cross win or tie over the Black Knights to qualify for the Patriot League Tournament. The Mids are currently 11-7-1, 4-3-0 in the Patriot League.
Sunday's match marked the final game for the four Bucknell seniors. Meghann Chipko, Ashley Dincher, who has missed most of the year with an injury, Megan Farrell and Michelle Santonacita ended their careers having experienced 32 victories in a Bison uniform.
