LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's soccer team came one step closer to solidifying a berth in the postseason with a 1-0 shutout victory on over Navy on Senior Day at West Fields Saturday afternoon. The Bison improved to 4-2 in the Patriot League and 6-9-1 overall. The Midshipmen fell to 3-9-4, 1-4-1 Patriot League.
The top four teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season qualify for the Patriot League Tournament, and Bucknell currently rests in third place. With a loss or a tie by either Colgate or Lehigh in their games against Holy Cross and Lafayette Saturday night, the Bison will clinch a berth. Bucknell still has one league contest remaining next Saturday against Holy Cross.
Highlighting the victory for the Bison was the second shutout in three games by freshman goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach. He posted the first shutout of his career last Sunday during a 1-0 victory over American. He equaled that feat by making three saves against the Mids.
Jonathan Hemmert scored the only goal of the game at the 32:28 mark when he took a pass from Justin Wolf and, while airborne, kicked it past Navy goalkeeper Frank DiFilippo. The score was the fourth of the season for Hemmert, a senior playing his final league game at home.
Hemmert attempted five shots in the contest, leading the way for Bucknell, which attempted 12 shots. Navy could only manage seven shots.
Despite not scoring a goal, Navy did have a couple of scoring chances to tie the game, but the Bison defense held them in check. With just over 20 minutes to play in the match, Zach Plies lofted a shot over Kuterbach's head that nearly bounced into the goal. However, senior Michael Lookingland snuck in behind Kuterbach and headed the ball away from the goal. Carter Stapleton also had a chance to tie the game for Navy, but his shot with just over two minutes remaining rolled wide left of the goal.
Bucknell will return to action Tuesday, Nov.2, when it hosts Philadelphia at 2:30 p.m. at West Fields. The non-league match will be the final home contest of the season for the Bison.
