STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Competing in what could be the strongest field they will see all season, the Bison women's golf team played well but settled for 13th place among 15 teams at Penn State's Nittany Lion Women's Invitational, which wrapped up Sunday at the Par-72 Penn State Blue Course.
After rain and darkness halted what was scheduled to be a 36-hole day on Saturday, the teams had to complete round two before teeing off for their final 18 holes on Sunday. After a terrific opening round of 325, six strokes shy of the school record, Bucknell finished with rounds of 340 and 331 for a 54-hole composite of 996.
UC-Irvine (897) earned a five-shot victory over College of Charleston (902). Princeton was third at 915, followed by Penn State (916), Rollins (926), Yale (946), Maryland (951), Xavier (952), Ohio (955), UNC Greensboro (957), William & Mary (968), Georgetown (969), Bucknell, Rutgers (1015) and Monmouth (1081).
In a lineup composed of three freshmen, a sophomore and a senior, first-year player Amy Loughney was the low Bison after rounds of 77-82-80. Her 239 total was good for 40th place. Senior captain Jaime Hays shot a team-low 79 in the final round after cards of 83 and 84.
Rookies Kristen Phalen (90-85-84) and Kathryn Batchelor (81-89-89) both shot 259, while sophomore Teri Schlang (84-90-88) finished in 262.
Another Bison freshman, Emily Chiodo, playing as an individual shot 87-83-86.
Selanee Henderson of UC-Irvine was the individual champion, finishing at 4-over 220 with rounds of 75-72-73. She won by one shot over College of Charleston's Angie Hill (73-74-74).
The Bison return to action Oct. 16-17 at the Yale Invitational.
