LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell freshman goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach, a member of the men's soccer team, recorded his first career shutout and made 14 saves in two games last week. For his performance he was honored as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and as the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week, it was announced Monday.
Kuterbach, who had just one career start prior to this week, appeared in the starting lineup against both Penn State and American last week. Against the Eagles, the Kingwood, Texas, native recorded a career-high 11 saves to earn his first career shutout as the Bison won 1-0 over first-place American. Nine of his stops came after halftime as the Eagles fired 23 shots, 16 after intermission. The shutout was just the second of the year for Bucknell.
Earlier in the week the Bison dropped a 2-0 decision to Penn State with Kuterbach making his first-ever start on the road. The rookie held the 21st-ranked Nittany Lions scoreless for the first 70:43 before allowing two goals within an eight minute stretch. Kuterbach made three saves in the contest. In five games this season, he has 18 saves and a .818 save percentage, best on the team.
Bucknell (5-8-1, 3-2-0 Patriot League) stands third in the Patriot League and is in position to qualify for the four-team postseason tournament. The Bison wrap up a grueling six-match road trip Tuesday night, Oct. 26, at No. 20 Maryland. Bucknell pulled off the biggest upset in school history with a 1-0 win over the then-No. 2 Terrapins last year. The victory halted a 23-game home win streak for Maryland. Tuesday's contest is slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
