BETHPAGE, N.Y. - Charlie Waddell's opening round 72 was one of four Bucknell scores of 76 or better, and the Bison stand in third place out of 13 teams at the halfway mark of the Hofstra Invitational after shooting a 297 team score Friday at the Bethpage State Park Red Course.
Bucknell is just three shots off the pace, set by Saint Francis (Pa.). Canada's Laval University is second at 295, followed by the Bison. Long Island, Siena and Quinnipiac are all tied for fourth after opening rounds of 300. Monmouth (302), Lafayette (308), Fairleigh Dickinson (310) and Pace (312) round out the top 10.
Waddell was one of five players in the field to shoot a two-over 72 on the par-70, 6,868-yard track. Craig Cyr of Quinnipiac fired a 71 to take the overnight lead. Joining Waddell at 72 were Siena's Robby Bigley, Matt Kleinrock of FDU, Charles Pantangco of LIU and Mike Hammond of Saint Francis.
Also in the top 10 for the Bison is Ryan Hom, whose opening-round 74 places him in a tie for 10th. Alex Dolle is tied for 16th with a 75, while freshman Keita Aoki is another stroke back at 76 and tied for 22nd. Tom Lane finished with Bucknell's fifth score, a 78 that puts him in a tie for 36th place.
The final round of the tournament begins Saturday morning on the famed Long Island course. Bucknell finished seventh at this event in 2003.
