LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore guard Lindsey Hollobaugh has been selected to the preseason All-Patriot League women's basketball team, the Patriot League office announced Thursday. In addition, Bucknell was picked fifth in a preseason poll of head coaches and sports information directors.
Hollobaugh, who averaged 16.7 points per game as a freshman, was joined on the all-league team by Colgate's Emily Braseth, Lehigh's Jessica DePalo, Holy Cross' Maggie Fontana and American's Chanel Hunt. Braseth and DePalo were chosen as preseason co-players of the year.
The Patriot League Freshman of the Year last year, Hollobaugh is the lone underclassman selected for the all-league team as the other four members are all seniors. Second on the team in scoring as a freshman, Hollobaugh totaled nine 20-point games, including the final six of the season. The Loganton, Pa., native also earned a conference record eight Freshman of the Week citations.
With 483 points as a rookie, Hollobaugh set Bucknell's rookie scoring record, eclipsing three-time Player of the Year Molly Creamer's freshman total of 475 points. In addition to her scoring, Hollobaugh averaged 5.5 rebounds per game, 2.9 assists per game and 1.7 steals per game to rank second on the team in each category. With her Rookie of the Year honor, Hollobaugh joined Kelly Dee, Vicki Quimby and Desire Almind as Bison who have won the award.
In the preseason poll Bucknell, which advanced to the Patriot League Tournament semifinals in 2003-04, was chosen to finish fifth, the same position they ended the season last year. Holy Cross, the team the Bison ousted from the postseason tournament one year ago, is forecasted to finish first with 84 points and five first-place votes. Last year's Patriot League representative in the NCAA Tournament, Colgate, matched the Crusaders' five first-place votes, but amassed just 82 points. American (72 points) and Lehigh (68 points) picked up two and three first-place tallies, respectively, as they were picked to finish third and fourth, just ahead of Bucknell and its 55 points. Army (36), Navy (27) and Lafayette (19) rounded out the voting.
The Bison are coming off a season in which they posted a 15-14 overall record and a 7-7 mark in Patriot League play. They return five of their top six scorers and head coach Kathy Fedorjaka welcomes a talented six-person recruiting class to the fold.
Along with Hollobaugh, junior Lindsey Geosits and senior Brooke Tomovich are expected to have fine seasons. Geosits started all but one game last year and averaged 5.9 points per game while dishing out a team-high 108 assists. Tomovich started just seven contests, but saw action in all 29 games and averaged more than 24 minutes per outing. She was the third-leading scorer on the team as she averaged 9.4 points per game in her first season in orange and blue.
The annual "Midnight Mania" event officially kicks off the 2004-05 basketball season late this Friday night at Sojka Pavilion. The Bison open their season on Nov. 19 against Florida International in the first game of the FIU Tournament in Miami, Fla. Bucknell's first home contest is Nov. 24 against Cornell.
