LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's swimming and diving team had the fastest time in all 17 events against Lafayette on Saturday, and the men took 13 of 17 events from the visiting Leopards en route to blowout victories on both sides. Bucknell's women won, 191-101, while the men's team racked up 181 points to Lafayette's 101. The female Bison stayed perfect with their fifth victory in as many dual meets this year, while the men's team improved to 2-3 in dual meet action.
The afternoon started out in record fashion for the Bison, as the women's 200 medley relay team of Lectie Altman, Jamie Flick, Lauren Reed, and Meghan Freese finished the race in 1:48.29, the seventh-best all-time at Bucknell. Mark Kretzer, William Schilling, Michael Willats, and Peter Garvin took the same event on the men's side.
Daniela Faas and Brooks Steadman each won their 1000 free races, while Altman and Todd Bauer swept the 200 free. Freese claimed the 100 back for Bucknell's women, but Lafayette's Chris Grabowski, who would go on to record three of Lafayette's four event wins, took the event on the men's side.
Bucknell's sweep success would continue for two more events, as Flick and Schilling claimed their respective 100 breast events, while Jackie Feinthel and Kretzer won their 200 fly competitions. Freese took the 50 free, but Lafayette's Jakub Pritz finished four hundredths of a second ahead of Garvin to take the event for the Leopards on the men's side. Faas and John Hoffman took both 400 IM races in the last swimming events before the diving competition.
Sarah Petcavage improved on her second-best all-time score for six optional one-meter dives, taking the event with 227.46 points. Jake Thompson won the six optional one-meter on the men's side, also with a second-best all-time score of 254.25. Lafayette did not enter any male divers in either event. Petcavage and Thompson also won the three-meter competition.
Following the diving, Bucknell resumed its swimming dominance. Freese won her third event of the afternoon, taking the 100 free, while Garvin did so on the men's side. Altman took the 200 back for the Bucknell women, but Grabowski claimed the same event for Lafayette's men. Flick and Schilling swept the 200 breast for Bucknell, followed by Feinthel and Bauer doing so in the 500 free.
Beginning with the 100 fly, Bucknell head coach Jerry Foley elected to cede the rest of the points on the women's side to Lafayette and declare Bucknell's female swimmers as exhibitions. Mary Krakowski had the fastest time in the race, while Kretzer claimed the points in the men's 100 fly. Laura Goeller had the fastest time in the 200 IM, while Grabowski won his third event of the afternoon on the men's side, the first event where Bucknell's men were declared exhibitions as well. The competition wrapped up with the 800 free relay. Bucknell's team of Feinthel, Robin Gibson, Carlyn Donley, and Nikki Woodward won that race for the women, while Ian Rawhauser, Bauer, Matt Hallowell, and John Hoffman claimed it for the Bison men.
Bucknell's women will look to make it a clean sweep of dual meet action both on the season and in the Patriot League when they take on Lehigh at 12 p.m. on Saturday at Bethlehem, Pa., while the men's team will look to even its record at 3-3 and build momentum going into the Bison Invitational, a preview of the Patriot League Championships. Five of the Patriot League squads will visit Lewisburg on Feb. 14, just two weeks before the league finals at Navy.
