LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Brooke Tomovich paced four Bucknell players in double-figures, but the Bison women's basketball team could not hold on to a 10-point first half lead in falling to Colgate, 78-66, in Patriot League action on Friday, January 30. The Orange and Blue drop to 2-4 in conference play, while the Raiders improve to 4-2.
Colgate got the scoring started with a Leandra Fuller layup at 19:20, but the Bison proceeded to score six unanswered and take the early lead. Bucknell would be in a tie or maintain the advantage for over 15 minutes, but the Raiders hot shooting kept them within striking distance.
The visitors made nine of their first 10 shots, including an Emily Braseth layup with 10:45 left in the half to tie the game for the fourth time at 19-19. From there, the Bison mounted a 10-0 run to build their largest lead of the game.
The Raiders used their hot shooting again to finish the half on an 18-4 run, hitting 6-of-8 shots from the field during the spurt.
The Bison, despite committing just four turnovers in the half, entered the locker room in a 37-33 hole.
After a Tomovich layup a minute into the final twenty cut it to two, Colgate scored nine of the game's next 11 points to open up a nine-point lead, 46-37. After a BU timeout, the host team quickly rattled off nine-straight points, including five from senior Kristin Valdner, to tie the game at 46. That was as close as the Bison would get, allowing the Raiders to go ahead by eight again less than four minutes later.
Lindsey Geosits' third three-pointer of the night at the nine minute mark got her squad within three, 58-55, and a Valdner layup with 5:39 left still had the team trailing 63-60, but the Orange and Blue were outscored 15-6 over the remainder of the game to drop the 78-66 decision.
Joining Tomovich in double-figures were freshman Lindsey Hollobaugh with 14, Geosits with 13 and Valdner with 12. Colgate held Bucknell's leading scorer, senior Desire Almind, to just nine points, but the country's leading rebounder did lead all players with 14 caroms.
The Bison defense returned the favor to Colgate, limiting Braseth, the Raiders leading scorer to just 10, but the visitors placed all five starters in double-figures, led by Malissa Burke's 24. Chigozie Ozor had 13, Fuller scored 12, and Milaina Lagzdins chipped in 11 to go with a team-high 10 rebounds.
Bucknell falls to 9-10 overall and will look to even its record when it hosts defending Patriot League champion Holy Cross on Sunday, February 1. Colgate improves to 12-7 overall.
