Bucknell Track and Field Competes on First Day of Bison Open and Pentathlon

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell Track and Field split its squad this weekend, sending some athletes to Penn State's National Invitational while keeping some at home to contend with 20 other schools on the first night of the Bison Open and Pentathlon at Gerhard Fieldhouse. Nine Bucknell women's athletes and 10 Bucknell men's athletes competed on Friday night.
Freshman pole vaulter Angie Hall was Bucknell's only athlete to win a competition either on the men's or the women's side, as she flew 11'9 ?" and bettered her personal mark by 11 ?". Hall's vault catapults her into the ECAC competition in March. She remains in the third spot on the Bucknell all-time list, behind a 12'1" vault in 2002 from Andrea Nyce and last weekend's 12'9 ?" vault from fellow freshman Melanie Buczko, who is taking the weekend off.
Nick DeGregorio threw the weight. Eric Heikkila also ran in the 5000 meter competition.
Danielle Todman, Nina Reinhardt, and Megan Frederick competed in the women's pentathlon. Each recorded at least one top-three finish among the five events. Todman's 9.25-second 60 meter hurdle time was good for third place, while Reinhardt's long jump of 17'8" came in second. Frederick's shot put of 38'9" won the event, while her 800 time of 2:34.97 was third. Todman finished with the third-highest number of points overall, with 3,122, while Reinhardt had a 12th-place 2,630, and Frederick's 2,478 was good for 15th place.
Kyle McLaughlin and Mike Mellas competed in the men's heptathlon, which began on Friday and will end Saturday. Of the five competitors, Mellas stands in fourth with 2,543 points and McLaughlin in fifth with 2,184 points. Mellas won the long jump with a leap of 22' ?". Millersville's Dan Ober leads with 2,715 points, while Chad Williams of The College of New Jersey is second with 2,682 and Kutztown's Steve Winters is third with 2,675 points. Bucknell did not enter any competitors in the pentathlon.
Competition resumes Saturday at 10:15 a.m.
