Melanie Buczko Named Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman pole vaulter Melanie Buczko (Butler, Pa./Butler) was chosen as the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week for the second time in as many weeks after winning the pole vault competition at the Bucknell Octagonal last Saturday. She broke her own Bucknell record, launching herself 12'9 ?", four inches higher than her previous mark. She first set the record in her Bucknell debut on Dec. 6 at the Bison Opener, where she jumped 12'3 ?", then broke it again on Jan. 17 at the Penn State Octagonal with a height of 12'5 ?".
The freshman was successful on the track as well as the vault. She completed the 55 meter hurdle race in 8.47 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in Bucknell history, while coming in third in the finals of the event.
Buczko reached the ECAC qualifying mark once again, ensuring that she will compete on March 6-7 at the prestigious meet for Eastern colleges held in Boston, Mass. The Bison women cruised to victory on Saturday with 196 points, while the next closest competitors were Duquesne and St. Francis (Pa.) with 86 each.
The Bison will split their teams next weekend, with some athletes attending the Penn State National Invitational and some staying home for the Bison Open and Pentathlon. Both events will stretch from Friday, Jan. 30 - Saturday, Jan. 31.
