LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior women's basketball player Desire Almind (Blairstown, N.J./North Warren Regional) is leading the country in rebounding with 14.0 caroms per game, according to the latest statistics released by the NCAA for games through January 19, 2004. Almind is pulling in nearly two more rebounds per game than the next closest player (UNLV's Sherry McCracklin - 12.2 rpg).
The 6-0 guard/forward has reached double-figures in the rebounding column in 13 games for the 8-8 Bison, recording a double-double in 11 of those contests. Her biggest double-double of the season came in a win over Iona when Almind scored 29 points and pulled in a career-high 20 rebounds to become just the third Bucknell player to record a 20-20 game in school history.
Almind is also nationally ranked in blocks per game, rejecting 2.4 shots each night out for the 24th best average. With nearly half of the season remaining, the co-captain has already achieved a career-best 39 blocks on the season, tied for the lead in the Patriot League. She needs just three more rejections to become Bucknell's single-season leader.
In addition to her prowess on the glass and her shot blocking ability, Almind is also leading the conference with 18.1 points per game, ranking her 54th in the nation in that category.
BU is 8-8 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League. The Orange and Blue travel to Army (10-5, 2-1 PL) for a showdown against the Black Knights on Friday, January 23, before heading to winless Lafayette for a contest on Sunday, January 25.
