WASHINGTON, D.C. - It was a case of history repeating itself as the Bucknell women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 50-49 decision at American on Saturday, January 10, in the Patriot League opener for both team's. Last season's conference opener held the same result for the Bison, as the Eagles scored with three seconds remaining to defeat BU 75-74.
Junior Lillian Drumgold scored seven of Bucknell's first 12 points, staking the Bison to an 11-6 lead. The Orange and Blue built it to as many as eight on four occasions, but got stuck at 24-16 for nearly four minutes before American stopped the drought with two Kim Salem free throws with 4:26 left in the half. Two Lindsey Hollobaugh free throws just 23 seconds later made it 26-18, but that would be the last time BU would score until the final two seconds of the frame to enter the locker room down, 29-28.
Hollobaugh scored Bucknell's final seven points of the half, and continued that into the second with the first five for the visitors. Both teams were cold offensively, hitting just four combined field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
A Joanna Barnes layup with 9:43 left in the contest gave American a 38-33 lead, its largest of the game. Senior Kristin Valdner responded with a three-point play just six seconds later to get BU back within two, and a Brooke Tomovich jumper at the 8:55 mark tied the game for the fourth time.
Tomovich proceeded to score eight of Bucknell's next nine points, including two three-pointers, over a four minute span to put the Orange and Blue on top, 47-45, with 2:51 to play. Salem got the Eagles back on top with her three-point play at 2:39, but two Drumgold free throws at the 1:23 mark gave BU a 49-48 advantage.
With nine seconds remaining, Hollobaugh's front end of a one-and-one bounced off the rim and into the hands of Chanel Hunt. Hunt got the ball to Kaitlin Schuyler, who drove the lane and hit the game-winner with 1.2 seconds remaining.
The American defense did a solid job on Bucknell's leading scorer, Desire Almind, limiting the senior to just one shot in the second half for eight points in the game. The 6-0 guard/forward still had an impressive game with 15 rebounds, a career-high five blocks and three steals.
Hollobaugh led all scorers with 17 points, and also pulled in seven rebounds. Tomovich came off the bench to score 10 points, all in the second half.
American was led by Angel Jordan's 13 points, including 10 in the final frame.
Bucknell falls to 7-7 overall and 0-1 in the Patriot League. The Bison travel to Lehigh on Wednesday, January 14, for a 5:30 p.m. game with the Mountain Hawks. The Eagles, who snapped a five-game slide with the win, are 6-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
