Northville, Mich. - The Bison women's team won the University of Detroit invitational this afternoon, finishing with 37 points. The top three Bucknell women's runners finished in fourth through sixth place overall. Leanna Nastase took fourth, while Jennifer Stevens took fifth and Lauren Bricker took sixth. The next closest team was Wayne State, with 44 points.
"The women ran a fantastic race and worked their way through the crowd, putting the hammer down in the last thousand meters," Head Coach Kevin Donner said. "It was nice to come out with a win and I am proud of our freshmen."
All Bucknell women's runners finished in the top 50. Other runners inside the top 20 were Julie Jakoboski in 13th with a time of 19:17, Jennifer Malcolm in 14th with a time of 19:27, and Alison Cole in 17th with a time of 19:36.
Additional Bucknell finishers were Lauren Kinsey (20th, 19:47), Mollie Harms (22nd, 19:50), Katie Pfeifer (26th, 20:06), Stephanie Keller (33rd, 20:41), Cadie Cargile (34th, 20:45), Cindy Carlson (37th, 21:00), Katherine Ballantine (40th, 21:04), Rebecca Pierotti (43rd, 21:09), and Emily Luderer (45th, 21:21).
The men finished third with 78 points. Eastern Michigan, a nationally-contending cross country team, won the event with 28 points, and Wayne State was second with 45.
Individually, senior Wes Reinhardt was Bucknell's top runner in ninth overall, finishing the race in 20:32. Another pack of Bison finished inside the top 20, led by Greg Costello (15th, 20:49), Dan Lounsbury (17th, 20:57), Nick Mousetis (18th, 20:58), and Aaron Hanlon (19th, 20:59).
"We would have liked to have placed higher. We ran well as a team, but we were too conservative. Our top guys ran faster in the second half of the race, which is a good sign for the team's future," Donner said.
Other Bucknell men's finishers included Doug Creveling (24th, 21:14), Sean McCarthy (25th, 12:15), Billy Duffy (27th, 21:17), Kevin Brown (30th, 21:24), Ryan Delaney (31st, 21:25), Eric Heikkila (33rd, 21:30), William Young (34th, 21:31), Stephen Schaefer (36th, 21:34), Travis Rivers (39th, 21:38), Kevin Fortkiewicz (43rd, 21:44), Kevin Walsh (45th, 21:47), Eric Harbison (52nd, 22:01), Derrin Pierret (54th, 22:02), John Trotta (57th, 22:05(, Alexander Lash (63rd, 22:21), and Adam Syty (71st, 22:37).
The Bucknell cross country teams will be in action again on September 19 when they host Susquehanna in a dual meet.
