LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Kelly O'Brien was named the Lewisburg Hotel Bison Athlete of the Week and Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 28 after scoring three goals in two games for the Bucknell field hockey team in the past week. Two of her goals were game-winners.
Against Maryland-Baltimore County, O'Brien scored the first goal of the game in a 4-0 rout of the Retrievers in Baltimore. Against league foe Lafayette on Saturday in Bucknell's first win at Graham Field, the new artificial turf facility on campus, O'Brien scored the first and third goals of the game in a 3-2 win.
Sophomore goalie Liz Jordan won the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for shutting out UMBC and making 12 saves against Lafayette. She had an .882 save percentage for the week and earned her second shutout of the year in her first season as Bucknell's top goalie.
The Bison are off to their best start since 1984 by winning five of their first six, including going 2-1 in the Patriot League.
Bucknell's next game will be on Tuesday at home against St. Francis (Pa.). The Bison are 2-0 all-time against the Red Flash, beating the team from Loretto, Pa., in 2001 and 2002. Should the Bison win, it will be the first time since 1975 that Bucknell has started the season 6-1, only the second time in program history they will have done so.
