LEWISBURG, Pa. - Saturday afternoon was filled with excitement for the Bucknell field hockey team. The Bison hosted Patriot League rival Holy Cross in the first-ever game on Graham Field, a brand new, state-of-the-art artificial turf field named after 1962 graduate and lead donor for the project, William Graham. Although excitement was high, in the end, the Bison suffered a 2-1 loss to the Crusaders.
Holy Cross struck first just under seven minutes into the game. Jillian LeClair converted on a penalty stroke with 28:19 left in the first half to give the Crusaders the early 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, the Orange and Blue responded to tie the contest 1-1. Junior defender Corin Inderbitzen-Brooks intercepted a pass at midfield and carried the ball into the Holy Cross circle. After eluding several defenders, Inderbitzen-Brooks sent the ball into the back of the cage for the first score of her career.
The two teams entered the intermission in the 1-1 deadlock. Holy Cross changed that just 2:27 into the second half when Jenna Cook got away from the pack to take on Bison goaltender Liz Jordan. Cook finished the play with a shot into the back left corner of the goal for the 2-1 lead which would hold up to the end.
Both teams had several opportunities to score. The Crusaders put 17 of their 21 shots on goal, but Jordan put forth a solid effort, recording a season-high 14 saves. Bucknell only missed the cage on three of its 13 shots, and Holy Cross goaltender Jennifer Corsilli stopped nine of those. The Bison led in penalty corners, 15-13.
Bucknell falls to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in Patriot League play. The Orange and Blue are in action next at UMBC on Tuesday, September 23, for a 7:00 p.m. game. Holy Cross improves to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
