West Long Branch, N.J. - The Bucknell field hockey team built on its undefeated start to the young season, winning 4-1 in a non-conference game over Monmouth. It was the first time in 12 games, dating back to last season, that Bucknell put four goals on the board.
Monmouth opened the scoring 13 minutes into the first half when sophomore forward Jess Miller put only the second goal of the season past fellow sophomore Liz Jordan, only the second goal scored on the Bison in three games. But the game was controlled by Bucknell to its extent, as sophomore forward Kelly O'Brien evened the game 20 minutes into the first half. The goal was her first of the year.
Meiko Boynton then scored her first of two goals on the day just before the half, which proved to be the game winner. Fourteen minutes into the second half, the junior forward scored her second goal of the game, extending Bucknell's lead. The two goals were her first of the year. Sophomore midfielder Kirsten Nilsen added to the Bison rally, scoring her second goal in as many games and all but cementing Bucknell's third victory on the year.
Bucknell's next game will be a special one, as the Bison will play the first match at Graham Field, the team's new artificial turf facility, on Saturday, Sept. 20. The field will be dedicated the previous night, Sept. 19. On a historical note, should Bucknell win, it would be the first time since 1984 that the Bison have started 4-0. That season, the Bison won their first five.
