Bucknell Men's Water Polo Advances to Championship Game of Own Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - In what was an intense game from start to finish, the Bucknell men's water polo team came away the victor in an 11-7 decision over Slippery Rock at the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday, September 13. With the win, the Bison earn the chance to play for the title against UC-Santa Cruz on Sunday, September 14 at 12:30 p.m.
The game started out very even with the two teams in a 1-1 deadlock for nearly four minutes of the first period. Junior Jay Danforth broke that tie, however, with 1:35 to go in the frame when he took a pass from junior Elliot Benoist for the 2-1 lead. The Orange and Blue went on to score two more in the quarter for a 4-1 lead after one.
The second quarter saw Bucknell outscore Slippery Rock 2-1 for a 6-2 halftime edge.
The intensity of the game became evident in the third quarter with several scuffles in the water leading to ejections. The Rock scored three goals in the period, all in an extra-man advantage. The Bison managed to net two of their own to maintain an 8-5 lead entering the final quarter.
Slippery Rock got as close as 8-6 when Derek Meyerson scored on a breakaway with 4:49 left in the contest. BU responded with two unanswered, though, to push it back to a four-goal game. The teams exchanged goals in the final minute for the 11-7 final.
Sophomore Bradley Roslyn was on fire offensively, scoring four times and adding an assist. Danforth was Bucknell's defensive force, recording a career-best eight steals in the contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper Trevor Mullins also had a solid game, registering seven saves and also grabbing a career-high five steals.
Bucknell is 2-4 overall. Slippery Rock falls to 4-2 overall.
