Lewisburg, Pa. - The Bucknell field hockey team opened its 2003 campaign this afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Siena College. Senior defender Kate Ruda had Bucknell's goal, 18:07 into the first period. Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Jordan began her first season as the Bison's top goalie with a four-save shutout.
Bucknell stifled Siena for much of the game, keeping the ball in the Siena end or the neutral zone most of the afternoon. Senior forward Lacee Iselo was the Saints' top attacker Saturday afternoon, with four of the team's seven shots, including one that nearly tied the game in the waning minutes. Jordan made a fine sliding save on Iselo's chance with just over three minutes left in the contest.
Ruda's goal was one of four shots she took in the first half and five for the game, but sophomore forward Kirsten Nilsen was Bucknell's top attacker with eight shots on the day. Siena junior goalie Kristen Heyde had ten saves. Sophomore midfielder Carli Cataldo had a chance at a penalty stroke in the first half, but was unable to convert.
Bucknell will play again on Tuesday at 6 p.m., when it hosts Drexel in the Dragons' season opener.
