LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell's Patriot League champion men's and women's swimming and diving teams both received national recognition for their academic achievements from the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) in the organization's annual All-Academic Team report.
The CSCAA categorizes teams' academic prowess into "commendable" (2.80-2.99 combined grade-point average), "excellent" (3.00-3.24) and "superior" (3.25-4.00) listings.
The Bucknell women's team garnered a "superior" rating with a combined GPA of 3.28. That ranked the Bison 29th in all of Division I, and second in the Patriot League. Bucknell's men finished 13th nationally with an "excellent" rating of 3.09.
Under the direction of league coach of the year Jerry Foley, the Bison capped a terrific 2002-03 campaign by garnering their first Patriot League swimming and diving titles, with both coming in their sparking new facility, Kinney Natatorium. Bucknell became the first institution in league history to claim both the men's and women's titles in the same year, while the Bison women turned in their first-ever undefeated dual-meet record at 7-0.
Bucknell's swimming and diving teams also fared well on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, with both squads leading the league in honor roll qualifiers. The Bison women had 17 student-athletes on the honor roll, while the men had a league-high 12 meet the requisite 3.20 GPA during the spring 2003 semester. Sophomore diver Adam Freeman was tabbed Patriot League Men's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year this past winter.
Bucknell's 2003-04 season kicks off with the Blue-Orange meet on Oct. 18, followed by the Bucknell Sprint Invitational in Kinney Natatorium on Nov. 8.
