LEWISBURG, Pa. - Six months after the Bucknell University Board of Trustees announced the implementation of a merit aid program, head women's basketball coach Kathy Fedorjaka is announcing her 2003-04 recruiting class. The class, which will be the first to play its entire career in the newly completed 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion, includes the first-ever merit aid recipients in Bucknell women's basketball history.
Those three recipients are Rachel Hanley, a 6'0" guard/forward from Charlottesville, Va. who played her scholastic basketball at Albemarle High School; Lindsey Hollobaugh, who adds local flavor to the roster as a 5'9" guard from Loganton, Pa. (Central Mountain); and Kyley Kidwell, a 5'10" point guard from Horton, Kansas (Horton High School). In addition, Fedorjaka welcomes 5'8" Amanda Fleming, a guard from nearby Shikellemy High School.
"I'm very excited about this incoming freshmen class," commented Fedorjaka. "I think that they will provide some impact minutes and play, and will help fill some of the void left by the graduation of Molly Creamer and Kate Franks."
Hanley is a second-team All-State player who earned Commonwealth District Player of the Year honors at the conclusion of her senior season. The three-time first-team All-District member led her team by averaging 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks during her final season. A first-team All-Northwest Region selection, Hanley was also named the Central Virginia Co-Player of the Year this past season. With over 1,100 career points and 700 career rebounds, she also excelled off the court as a member of the Western District and Commonwealth District All-Academic Teams.
"Rachel is very athletic and can run the floor well," said Fedorjaka. "Her strengths allow her to fit well into our system - a forward who can run the floor, step out to the perimeter and knock down a fifteen foot shot, and extend in our defensive pressing style."
Hollobaugh averaged 21 points, four assists, four rebounds and four steals per game at Central Mountain. An athletic guard, Hollobaugh brings the scorers mentality to the floor, while also playing excellent defense. She is an uptempo guard who sees the floor well and will be effective in helping Bucknell to run the break. In addition to her success on the basketball court, Hollobaugh was an All-State long jumper on the track and field team.
"Lindsey will bring depth at the two or three guard position for us," commented Fedorjaka. "Her role in high school was to score, and she has developed the ability to score in many different capacities. She can slash, as well as shoot from the perimeter, including three-point range. She is a great open court player and is solid on the defensive end of the floor."
Kidwell averaged 15 points, four assists, three steals and three rebounds per game at Horton High School in Kansas as a three-year starter. As a senior, she was named to the All-State second-team and was listed on the Top-10 Players list in Northeast Kansas. Kidwell led her team to a 10-0 Delaware Valley League regular season record, capturing the league title, and earning the school's first state tournament berth since 1980. A unanimous Delaware Valley League selection in both her junior and senior seasons, she was also successful outside of basketball. Kidwell was a member of the National Honor Society, earning three All-Delaware Valley League Academic Letters.
"Kyley is an athletic guard with good speed, athleticism and jumping ability," said Fedorjaka. "She is a good ball handler with great vision and passing skills. Well suited for the one or two guard position, Kyley is a playmaker with the ability to score, as well as defend on the opposite end."
Fleming comes to Bucknell after a fine career at Shikellemy High School. The guard capped her senior season with a selection to the All-State third-team. She was named the Susquehanna Valley League Player of the Year, while also garnering Daily Item Player of the Year honors. In addition, Fleming was named a Northumberland County Scholar-Athlete.
"I have been very impressed with Amanda's dedication to the game and her work ethic," said Fedorjaka. "She is a tough, blue collar player with great intensity on the floor. Amanda likes to push the ball, run the floor and play tough man to man defense, which again fits well into our uptempo style."
The Bison open the 2003-04 season on Friday November 21, 2003 at West Virginia and return to Lewisburg and Sojka Pavilion for the home opener on Tuesday November 25, 2003 against Loyola College (Md.).
