FAIRFAX, Va. - On Sunday, Bucknell's women's varsity crew competed in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on the Occoquan Reservoir in Fairfax, VA. The most outstanding performance of the day came from the varsity eight, finishing second by .2 seconds to Drexel University. George Mason, Johns Hopkins and Loyola finished 10.9, 13.2 and 20.4 seconds behind the lady bison.
"The varsity eight had a remarkable performance," said Head Coach Stephen Kish. "Our women were focused and determined. We need to use this momentum to catapult us into the weekend."
The varsity eight is comprised of coxswain Kyra Harris, Jill Harrington, Vi Ngo, Lauren Ewald, Kara Schroepfer, Lauren Donnelly, Joan Wendler, Alexis Will and Rachel Trusheim. This is the first time the women's varsity eight has ever medaled at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships.
The lady bison, described as the "flying bison" by Coach Kish, will be competing at Dad Vail Regatta on May 9th and 10th. This is the season ending championship for the women's crew.
The varsity pair of Julie Engel and Rebecca Newman won their qualifying head and then finished first in a six-boat grand final. Carnegie Mellon finished 8.6 seconds behind in second place.
"Our pair had a very difficult day," said Coach Kish. "They will show much more speed this coming weekend."
The novice eight boat finished second, three seconds behind George Mason 14 seconds ahead of Penn State. The novice eight included coxswain Alison Solano, Teal Zeisler, Natalie Wiest, Meredith Cutting, Allison DeKnight, Lisa Kim, Amanda Roof, Ashley White and Amy Bossler.
The novice four missed qualifying for the grand finals by 1.1 seconds and went on to win the second level final by 12.5 seconds, placing them seventh of 14 crews. The four is comprised of coxswain Caroline Karlberg, Christine Bufton, Erica Augustenborg, Jean Wells and Caitlin Scudder.
"Both novice boats are coming together well," said Coach Kish. "It will be very exciting to see if either of them can qualify for the finals at Dad Vail."
The women's varsity four had a difficult race, finishing fourth of five. The crew includes coxswain Nicole Tomlin, Allison Gasbarra, Candice Olszewski, Jennifer Prunoske and Tracy Menkowski.
