LEWISBURG, Pa. - Junior Noel Powell repeated as conference champion in the long jump, earning Bucknell's lone gold medal on the first day of the Patriot League Championships Friday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. With six events in the books, the Bison stand in second place with 36 points, 30 behind leader Army.
Powell, who also captured the long jump at the conference indoor championships this winter, posted a mark of 23 feet, 8 inches. He outdistanced Army's Jeff Weaver by just under two inches. Powell's win in the long jump was just part of an excellent day for Bucknell's star athlete. He also posted the top qualifying time in both the 100-meter dash (10.57) and the second-fastest in the 200-meter dash (21.36). His 100-meter time shattered Martin Carter's 23-year-old school record. Carter ran 10.62 in 1980. Powell's previous personal best had been 10.65.
Bucknell had two scorers in the 10,000 meters, as Wesley Reinhardt (31:50.99) and Daniel Lounsbury (31:57.39) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Justin McKnight placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 201' 6", and Jeffrey Arek cleared 14' 7 ?" in the pole vault, also claiming fourth place. Adam Kaufman was fifth in the hammer throw with a top mark of 156' 6".
In the first relay of the championships, Lou Palma anchored Bucknell's 4x800-meter foursome that finished third in 7:36.02, the fifth-fastest time in school history.
In other preliminary competition, Ryan Newberger will join Powell in the finals of the 200 meters, while Richard Alexander tied for the second-fastest heat in the 100-meter hurdles.
Army, which is looking for its 12th straight men's outdoor title, picked up wins in the hammer throw, pole vault and javelin on Friday. Colgate's Xavier deBoisezon won the 10K, while American earned gold in the 4x800 relay.
Trailing Army and Bucknell in the standings are Lehigh (28), American (21), Lafayette (19), Colgate (13) and Holy Cross (3).
Day two of the championships kicks off Saturday at 11:15 a.m., with the first running event slated for a noon start.
