LEWISBURG, Pa. - Noel Powell had another record-setting performance in the 100-meter dash, helping Bucknell claim second place for the sixth straight year at the Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which wrapped up Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Army continued its Patriot League men's track and field dominance, winning its 12th straight outdoor title. The Bison have finished second 10 times in that span. In 2003, the Black Knights accumulated 188 points, while Bucknell totaled 105.
American finished third with 84 points, followed by Colgate (80), Lafayette (75), Lehigh (75) and Holy Cross (44).
Powell was the star of the meet for the Orange and Blue. After winning the long jump on Friday, he defended his Patriot League title in the 100-meter dash on Saturday. Despite a slight stumble out of the blocks, Powell clocked a time of 10.52, shattering his own school and meet record of 10.57, which he had set in Friday's preliminaries.
In perhaps the closest 200-meter dash final in league history, Powell was edged out by Colgate's Tyrone Russell in a photo finish by a mere thousandth of a second. Russell's official time was 21.465, while Powell's was 21.466. Powell also anchored Bucknell's runner-up 4x100-meter relay, which matched the third-fastest time (41.63) in school history. Russell also won the 400 meters and anchored Colgate's win in the 4x400 relay.
Ryan Newberger had a terrific day as well, earning bronze medals in both the 200 and 400 meters. Newberger finished just behind Powell in the 200 (21.59), and he clocked 49.22 to move into a tie for 10th place all-time at Bucknell in the 400.
Bryan Johnston finished second in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:10.66, while teammate Stephen Schaefer took fifth in 9:28.36. Also scoring in distance events were Wesley Reinhardt, who was fifth in the 5,000 meters (14:55.59), and Lou Palma, sixth in the 1,500 (3:51.51).
Eric Furst medaled in the 800 meters, placing third in 1:53.837, just one thousandth of a second ahead of Jon Dreher of Army. In the 100-meter high hurdles, Rich Alexander placed fourth in 15.19.
Bucknell scored in two field events on Saturday. Mike Mellas was fourth in the triple jump (44 feet, 10 ? inches), and Dan Frake was sixth in the shot put (44' 6"). Other Saturday winners included Army's Travis Pendleton in the discus, Lehigh's Francis Vincent in the triple jump, Lafayette's Carey Kristopher in the 110-meter hurdles, Army's Aaron Smead in the steeplechase, American's Sean Duffy in the 1,500, American's Matt Seymour in the 5,000, American's Sean O'Brian in the 800, Army's Travis Hopper in the 400 hurdles, Colgate's Waldemar Auguscinski in the shot put and Army's Jeff Weaver in the high jump.
Bucknell returns to action next weekend at the James Madison Invitational, a final tuneup prior to the ECAC Championships May 16-18.
