LEWISBURG, Pa. - After recording 10 hits against Lehigh in the elimination game earlier in the day, Navy set a new Patriot League Tournament record with 24 hits in a decisive 16-3 victory over top-seeded Bucknell in the first game of the best-of-three championship series Saturday at Depew Field.
The Midshipmen, seeded second in the tournament, scored one run in the first inning, however the Bison answered with a run in their half of the first when Pete Wolf grounded out allowing Ben Stoll to advance home to tie the score at 1-1.
In the second, 2003 Patriot League Pitcher of the YearKevin Miller (7-1) was touched for seven more runs, six earned, on two singles, two doubles and two triples -- all coming after the first two batters of the inning were retired. Kevin Burns replaced Miller, but Navy left the second inning with an 8-1 lead.
Stoll scored the Bison's second run of the afternoon on a single by Wolf in the third frame. In the fourth, Ben Krentzman tripled to center left field and scored on a ground out by Brian Day.
Navy was unable to score in two straight innings, but tallied one run in the fifth. In the sixth, Tim Peacock replaced Burns on the mound and the Midshipmen scored three more to take an even greater lead of 12-3.
The Midshipmen scored once again in the seventh, after Candeto scored on a double laced by Farmer. Navy did not hold back in the eighth while crossing the plate two more times. They added the last run in the ninth after Farmer tripled to center left field and was plated by Hearn.
Navy tied the Patriot League record for runs in a tournament game. Every Midshipmen starter had at least two hits, including four each by Farmern and Pete Curnow.
The Bison allowed Navy to go 15-for-23 in two-out situations, resulting in 12 runs. The Mids earned the championship series berth with a 6-3 win over third-seeded Lehigh earlier on Saturday. Candeto doubled, tripled and homered in the win.
Bucknell and Navy return to Depew Field on Sunday, May 11 in the second of three games of the Patriot League Tournament. The first pitch will be thrown at noon. If necessary, game three will begin 30 minutes after the first ends.
