FAIRFAX STATION, Va. - On Sunday, Bucknell's women's crew competed in the Occoquan Sprints, in Fairfax Station, Va, and enjoyed a very successful day on the water.
Bucknell's Varsity Pair, juniors Julie Engel and Rebecca Newman, placed first out of six boats with a time of 9:00.5. The Bison crossed the line 44 seconds before runner-up Penn State. Following boats included LaSalle, Johns Hopkins, Pittsburgh and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
The Varsity Four completed its race in 8:06.7 to place second in its own straight final, and finished seventh out of 23 boats overall. Coxswain Nicole Tomlin, Allison Gasbarra, Candice Olszewski, Jennifer Prunoske and Tracy Menkowski competed in the Varsity Four.
"This was a very encouraging result for a very young crew comprised of four second-year rowers," stated Kish.
The Varsity Eight finished third (6:59.7) in a competitive field of 16 boats. During the preliminary heat, Bucknell qualified for the finals after finishing second to Drexel. Bison members on the Varisty Eight included coxswain Kyra Harris, Jill Harrington, Vi Ngo, Lauren Ewald, Kara Schroepfer, Lauren Donnelly, Joan Wendler, Diana Scheerbaum and Rachel Trusheim.
"This was an impressive performance for the women," said Kish. "George Mason, whom we beat by over four seconds, is a perennial rival for our women's crew."
Boat A of the Bison Novice Eight qualified for the final race from a field of 14 crews and finished sixth. Boat B finished fourth out of six in a straight final.
The Bison are scheduled to participate in the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. on April 12-13. The regatta will provide competition for over 50 schools from California to Maine, Wisconsin to Florida.
