WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Bucknell junior Noel Powell won two events and placed third in another to lead the Bison track and field team to a strong fifth-place finish at the Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary on Friday and Saturday.
Thanks to 26 points from the legs of Powell in the team's first scoring meet of the spring, the Bison picked up 63 points to edge sixth-place Rhode Island by just one point. Penn State won the meet with 192 points, well ahead of host William & Mary (102). Seton Hall was third with 80 points, while St. Francis scored 66 to nudge past Bucknell.
Powell was the only male collegian to win multiple events at the prestigious meet that included more than 3,000 athletes. Powell wasn't the only Bison sprinter to score in more than one event. Ryan Newberger took 6th in both the 100 (11.17) and 200 (21.99).
In the distance events, Stephen Schaefer was runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. His time of 9:24.34 was second only to Boston University's Jochen Dieckfoss, who ran an NCAA-qualifying time of 8:55.61.
Lou Palma placed third in the 1,500 meters in an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:49.85. The Bison also had success in two distance relays, placing seventh in the 4x1500 (15:51.85) and seventh in the distance medley (10:22.50). Bucknell was also sixth in both the 4x100 (42.48) and 4x200 (1:29.09) relays.
In addition to Powell's win in the long jump, two other Bison scored in field events. Lewisburg native Adam Jacob tied for fourth in the pole vault, clearing 15' 1", while Drew Folk tied for seventh in the high jump with a leap of 6' 2 ?".
