WORCESTER, Mass. - Bucknell's women's crew competed in the Patriot Challenge, in Worcester, Mass., this weekend. Highlights included one second place finish from the varsity four and two second place finishes from the novice squads.
The varsity four placed second behind Colgate. The crew includes coxswain Nicole Tomlin, Allison Gasbarra, Candice Olszewski, Jennifer Prunoske and Tracy Menkowski.
"This was a great performance for the women's four," mentioned head coach Stephen Kish.
The first novice eight boat finished second in a six boat final, only 1.7 seconds behind Colgate. The novice eight included coxswain Alison Solano, Teal Zeisler, Natalie Wiest, Meredith Cutting, Allison DeKnight, Lisa Kim, Amanda Roof, Ashley White and Amy Bossler.
"I think these women still have a lot of speed to gain in the next three weeks," said Coach Kish.
Bucknell's second novice eight, placed second behind Lafayette. The crew had a dramatic finish coming from behind and passing Holy Cross. The crew consisted of coxswain Katie Walter, Elena Keates, Amanda McCain, Courtney Luzzi, Rebekah Tessier, Shinika St. Cyr, Erica Augustenborg, Jessie Young and Amy Boddorff.
The women's novice four placed third out of six boats. The four is comprised of coxswain Caroline Karlberg, Christine Bufton, Erica Augustenborg, Jean Wells and Caitlin Scudder. The Bison finished behind Lafayette and Colgate.
The varsity eight had a very dissappoint race, finishing fifth out of six boats. The varsity eight is comprised of coxswain Kyra Harris, Jill Harrington, Vi Ngo, Lauren Ewald, Kara Schroepfer, Lauren Donnelly, Joan Wendler, Alexis Will and Rachel Trusheim.
"Although very unfortunate, I am glad we had this experience now instead of later," said Coach Kish. "I think the women learned a good lesson today about preparation and focus."
Bucknell's Varsity Pair, juniors Julie Engel and Rebecca Newman, placed 12th out of 13 boats at the National Selection Regatta in Mercer Lake, N.J.
"The pair received great experience rowing against the U.S. National team and a variety of national caliber rowers," said Coach Kish.
