LEWISBURG, Pa. - Playing a Patriot League doubleheader that was postponed from two weeks ago, the Bucknell softball team picked up a sweep of Lafayette on Thursday, April 24. BU defeated the Leopards 3-0 in the opener and 3-1 in the nightcap.
The Bison were out-hit in both games, but managed to get out of any jams to preserve the wins.
In the opener, Bucknell staked pitcher Lauren Box to an early 2-0 lead after just one inning, and it would be all the team would need. In the bottom of the first, Jenna Fitch drew a one-out walk, and Angela Stackhouse followed with a single through the left side to put runners on first and second. Kris Devore stepped up and delivered a two-run double to right field to give the host team the early lead.
The Orange and Blue tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when Lauren Wible scored on Box's single to center field.
Lafayette's only real threat came in its half of the fifth. Meghan Davis led off the frame with a single. After a fielder's choice forced Davis out but left Amy Magos on first, Jackie Fitzgerald singled up the middle to place runners on first and second. The Bison got out of the jam with outs on the next two batters. Danielle Bernotsky blooped a shot between short stop and centerfield, but BU centerfielder Jill Pompeii picked it up on the hop and forced Magos out at third. Box induced a grounder to third from Gianna Lopreato to get out of the inning.
Box pitched the complete game shutout, allowing five hits and striking out five while walking none. The senior was also 1-for-2 with an RBI at the plate.
Lafayette struck early in the nightcap, building a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out and two on, Tara Martinho singled through the left side, plating Laura Schrager, who had reached on a fielder's choice. BU pitcher Julie Williams got two of her season-high eight strikeouts to end the inning with no more damage.
The score remained in the Leopards favor until the bottom of the fourth when Wible sent a one-out pitch over the right centerfield fence, scoring herself and Stackhouse, who had singled to open the inning.
Bucknell took a 3-1 lead in its half of the sixth when Meredith Gill hit a single through the left side to score Wible, who led off the frame with a walk.
Williams went the distance, allowing six hits, striking out eight and walking one.
The Orange and Blue improve to 10-29 overall and 5-10 in Patriot League play. Bucknell will play the first of three games on Friday, April 25, at 5:30 p.m. at Army. The Bison will face the Black Knights in a doubleheader, before taking on Holy Cross at 8:30 in a single game.
Lafayette falls to 5-27 overall and 1-15 in conference play.
