LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell won the doubles point, and took three of the first four singles matches in a must win situation, defeating Lehigh 4-1 on Wednesday, April 23, to earn a berth in the upcoming Women's Tennis Patriot League Championship. With the victory, the Bison earned the fourth and final seed in the event and will face top-seeded Army on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 a.m.
The Mountain Hawks, who entered the match in the same must-win situation as the Orange and Blue, came out strong in doubles play. The number three tandem of Jamie Fass and Maria Anorga made quick work of BU's Samantha Berthod and Rheanna Gaskin in an 8-2 win.
It appeared as if Lehigh was going to win the doubles point, with both one and two doubles teams leading BU at one point. The number one Bucknell duo of Veronica Brown and Nadezda Curcic refused to go down, however, winning five-straight games after trailing 6-3 to defeat Kristen Nowicki and Kristin Mulstay 8-6. Tanya Sichko and Jill Wurzburg made a similar move against Andrea Scott and Alina Kors, coming back from a 5-3 deficit to win 8-5 at the third flight, and secure the doubles point.
Lehigh got on the board with Nowicki's 6-0, 6-2 win over Curcic at number one, but that was as close as the Mountain Hawks would get.
Brown handled Scott in a 6-4, 6-1 second flight win, while Wurzburg earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Fass at number three to finish the regular-season of her final year as a dual winner.
Sichko secured the match with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Anorga at number four. The five and six singles bouts were not finished because Bucknell had already won the match.
The Orange and Blue improve to 15-5 overall and 2-3 in Patriot League play. Bucknell faces Army in the opening round of the Patriot League Championship on Saturday, April 26. The finals will be contested at 12:00 noon on Sunday, at Army. Lehigh falls to 11-7 overall and 1-4 in conference action.
