TOWSON, Md. - Bucknell sophomore Kelli Haskins helped her own cause with a game-winning single in the nightcap of a softball doubleheader at Towson on Wednesday, April 2, as the Bison defeated the Tigers 4-3 in eight innings after losing an 11-0 game in the opening contest. Haskins had come in to relieve senior Lauren Box in the sixth inning of the final game, also picking up the win on the mound.
The Orange and Blue struggled to find their offense in the opener, recording only one hit in the five inning game. Freshman Lauren Wible provided the only real threat for the Bison with a single to open the second inning. She was stranded at second, however, ruining Bucknell's only chance to score.
The Tigers, on the other hand, got plenty of offense, pounding out 14 hits and scoring 11 runs in the contest. Included in that were 3-for-3 performances from Jillian Fraser and Jean Bosch.
Towson got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Katie Mumbauer. The host team used the third and fourth innings to collect 10 hits and score 10 runs to put the game out of reach. The fourth frame featured three doubles and two triples by the Tigers, on their way to scoring six runs in the inning.
Facing the 10-run rule in the top of the fifth, BU put runners on second and third after two wild pitches, but Towson hurler Brianna Lindner induced a pop up to third to end the threat and the game 11-0 in the Tigers' favor.
It was the Bison jumping out to a 3-0 lead after three in the nightcap. Box drew a walk to open the third inning and freshman Christina Gilbert followed with a single. After senior Meredith Gill's shot to third resulted in an error to load the bases, junior Kristen Potts received another walk to plate the first run of the game. The next batter, junior Angela Stackhouse delivered a timely double, scoring Gill and Gilbert for the three run lead.
The Tigers got all three back in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring once in the fourth and twice in the fifth. The tie game stood until the top of the eighth inning.
After freshman Kris Devore opened the frame with a single off Towson's Beth Wilcox, sophomore Jill Pompeii grounded into a fielder's choice, which forced out freshman pinch runner Alyssa Schneebaum at second base. With one out in the inning, sophomore Jennifer Ross reached base on an error by Sam Schaukowitch, giving the Bison runners on first and third. Haskins followed with a single to left field, scoring Ross for the eventual game-winning run.
Haskins pitched 2.2 innings of relief, allowing no hits and striking out one. Wilcox took the loss for the Tigers, giving up three hits in three innings of work.
Bucknell moves to 4-19 overall. The Orange and Blue host Lafayette on Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6, for a pair of Patriot League doubleheaders. Saturday's games are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. Towson is 11-11-1 overall.
