LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell senior shortstop Meredith Gill went 3-for-6 in a doubleheader sweep of visiting George Washington on Wednesday afternoon. The Bison defeated the Colonials 7-0 in the opener, and won 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Orange and Blue got on the board in the bottom of the third with two runs on three hits and two errors. Angela Stackhouse ripped a two-out single through the left side, followed by a single through the right side by Lauren Wible. An error on the play allowed Wible to advance to third, and Stackhouse came across with the first run of the game. Kris Devore stepped up and delivered an RBI singles up the middle to score Wible for the 2-0 lead.
The two squads were scoreless for the next three innings before the Bison exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Devore led off with a double to center field. Jenny Ross followed with a single up the middle that plated Devore. Two outs later, the Orange and Blue put together another rally, beginning with Christina Gilbert's walk.
Jill Pompeii then singled to right center, and Gill doubled down the leftfield line to plate Gilbert. Kristen Potts pounded out Bucknell's third straight hit with an RBI single through the left side, forcing a George Washington pitching change. Stackhouse drew a walk to load the bases, before all three runners advanced on a wild pitch. Just a few pitches later, Potts scored on a wild pitch to end the Bison scoring in the frame.
BU's Lauren Box sat GW down in order in the top of the seventh to come away with the two-hit shutout.
In game two, Bucknell scored at least one run in all but the first inning on its way to the 8-0 five inning victory. Lauren Wible led off the second inning with the first of her three walks in the game. One out later, Ross walked, and the two runners ended up on second and third after a passed ball. Alyssa Schneebaum stepped up to deliver an RBI single through the left side, and Ross ended up scoring on the play on a George Washington miscue at the plate.
Schneebaum eventually scored on a wild pitch to round out the scoring in the inning.
The Bison scored twice in the third and fourth innings to lead 7-0 entering the fifth. With one out and one on, Gill singles through the left side to put runners on first and second. Potts followed with a game-winning double to left field, plating Gill and ending the game in five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Julie Williams threw four solid innings for Bucknell, striking out five and walking only one while only giving up three hits. Kimberly Grunwald came in for an inning of relief in her first action of the season, allowing no base runners and striking out one.
Bucknell is 8-23 overall. The Bison host Lehigh on Saturday and Sunday for two Patriot League doubleheaders. George Washington is 2-25.
