SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - In Bucknell's first-ever appearance in the Palmetto Utility Protection Service Big South Championship, seniors Jess Hetrich and Molly Campbell both carded rounds of nine-over-par 81, but the back end of the lineup struggled on Sunday and the Bison stand in seventh place after the first round with a team score of 342.
Favored UNC Wilmington took the first-round lead with a 325, eight shots better than Coastal Carolina. Elon and Charleston Southern are tied for third at 329, followed by Birmingham-Southern in fifth at 332, Winthrop sixth at 335, Bucknell seventh at 342, Radford eighth at 346 and Holy Cross ninth at 414.
Yunuen Sanchez of UNCW fired the day's low round with a three-over 75. Coastal Carolina's Morgan O' Banion, along with Winthrop's Shannon Hopkins and UNCW's Audrey Gale are in a tie for second at 79.
Hetrich and Campbell join three others in a tie for seventh place following their rounds of 81. Campbell went out in 44, but shot a scintillating 37 on the back nine, the lowest second-nine score in the entire field.
Also for Bucknell, Amy Jones shot 89, Kelly Evans 91 and Jaime Hays 92.
Bucknell, Holy Cross and UNC Wilmington are associate members in the Big South in women's golf. Birmingham-Southern is not eligible for the championship because they are a provisional member of NCAA Division I and the Big South Conference. The Panthers will be eligible for the 2004 championship.
Round two will begin Monday morning at 7:08 a.m. The third and final round will take place on Tuesday at 7:16 a.m. The winner of the Big South will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
