BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In the third week of Patriot League play, Bucknell baseball (15-8, 7-3) split a pair with Lehigh (13-14, 4-5) on Saturday at Goodman Field. Junior pitcher Kevin Miller received his fifth win of the season in a 3-1 victory over the Mountain Hawks, while freshman Phil Futrick racked up his seventh save in the seventh inning. Senior R.J. Grant dropped his second loss of the season in a 4-0 decision in game two.
Five hits for the Bison assisted in the 3-1 win in game one. Bucknell scored in the third inning after sophomore Phil Bunting advanced to first on a single. Three batters later, Ben Stoll singled and plated Bunting for the 1-0 lead. The Mountain Hawks tied the game, at 1-1, in the fourth inning after Jesse Novalis doubled and advanced home on a single by Jeremy Mack.
The Orange and Blue secured their lead in the sixth inning with two runs. Stoll reached first on a fielding error by Lehigh's first basemen, Mike Sandonato, and then advanced to second on the throw. Sam Moss walked and then the duo each stole a base. Brian Day received an RBI after he singled, scoring Stoll. Brian Hirschberg reached first on a fielder's choice, Moss scored and Day was out on the play.
Miller pitched six innings, giving up four hits and one earned run. The junior pitcher, now 5-0, struck out five batters and walked three. In the seventh, Futrick replaced Miller on the mound. The freshman struck out two batters and earned his seventh save of the season. Futrick is now tied, with Greg Farmery '02, for saves in a season.
Game one was a dual between Lehigh's Jack Muscalus and Miller, two of the top Patriot League pitchers. The Bison gave Muscalus his second loss of the season and now owns a 4-2 record. In game two, the Bison were held scoreless by the Mountain Hawks. Bucknell tallied one hit in the first inning by Day and in the top of the fourth Moss singled to record the second hit. Lehigh scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning.
Lehigh's Adam Marr earned his second win of the season, while tallying his first shut-out. Marr struck out seven Bison and walked three. While pitching six innings, Grant gave up four earned runs on six hits. The senior pitcher struck out one and walked two. Grant now owns a 4-2 record on the season.
The Bison will face Lehigh for the last two games of the four-game series, Sunday, April 13. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon in Bethlehem, Pa.
