HAMILTON, N.Y. - Junior Meredith Wright scored two goals and added three assists, but it was not enough as the Bucknell women's lacrosse team dropped a 9-6 decision at Colgate on Saturday, April 12. With the victory, the Raiders earned a spot in the Patriot League playoffs.
Colgate jumped out to a 5-2 first half lead thanks to five free position goals. Freshman Katie McVeigh tallied a first half hat trick, scoring three of the Raiders first four goals.
The Bison got on the board with a free position goal from Wright at 18:55. Sophomore Andrea Paraud made it 3-2 with her goal with 6:54 left in the half. Wright was credited with the assist. After the two Bucknell scores, Colgate netted two more goals from McVeigh and Becky Ortolano to set the first half score at 5-2.
The two squads played an even 4-4 second half. The Orange and Blue cut the lead to two on three separate occasions, but Colgate held off Bucknell for the three-goal win. BU started the second half scoring with a Cora Preston goal just 1:52 into it, but every time the Bison scored, the Raiders would answer. The two teams went back and forth throughout the entire frame with Colgate hanging on for the three-goal win.
Senior Nicole Kallis stopped nine shots in goal for Bucknell, while also collecting three ground balls. Colgate netminder Sue Bielamowicz made 11 saves while allowing only six goals.
Bucknell drops to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in Patriot League play. The Bison return home to host La Salle in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, April 16. Colgate is now 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League, good for a first place tie with American University.
