LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell women's water polo team carried a 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter, but failed to score in the final frame, as George Washington scored three to come away with a 9-7 win in the first round of the Collegiate Water Polo Southern Division Championship. The Bison are hosting the league event for the first time in the history of the program.
The Orange and Blue found themselves facing a 4-2 deficit at halftime. Bucknell came out firing in the second half, scoring on three-straight possessions within a 1:21 span to take a 5-4 lead. Freshman Kaitlin Bardoe got the flurry started, taking a pass from senior Katie Stahler and lobbing it over the GW goalkeeper. Stahler followed with one of her own, backhanding a pass from sophomore Cody Keffer into the net. Sophomore Eileen Ketterer gave the Bison the lead with her score from the left side.
The two teams went back and forth for the next three minutes, capped by freshman Jennifer Meitzner's lose ball goal with 2:08 to play in the third, giving Bucknell a 7-6 lead.
It was all George Washington in the fourth, however, as the Colonials outscored BU 3-0 in the frame en route to the come-from-behind win.
Bardoe finished the game with two goals and two steals. Ketterer also tallied twice in the contest, while Stahler had a goal and an assist to go with two steals and three ejections drawn.
Senior goalkeeper Lindsay Chesterfield made seven saves for the Orange and Blue.
Bucknell, the fifth seed at the event, falls to 10-14 overall. The Bison face ninth-seeded Washington & Jefferson at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. George Washington improves to 14-9.
